One of the most important stages in our life is when you are a teenager. According to the website www.healwithart.com –“Individuals with developmental disabilities (DD) are often over-looked population. There may ne deficits in intellectual and emotional functioning, physical deformities, of an inability to communicate verbally.” These kids mostly suffer in many different ways: a loss of physical ability, a loss of memory and brain functions, an impairment of emotional control, anxiety, depression, loneliness, isolation and frustration, and others.”This group would greatly benefit from psychotherapeutic intervention. As many individuals with a DD are unable to participate in insight oriented psychotherapy, art therapy is in a unique position of being able to offer psychotherapy in a mixed verbal and non-verbal, direct, gentle and less threatening form.”
What is art therapy?
According to the website, “Art therapy is an unconscious form of therapy that bypasses the powerful and rational brain and goes directly to the healing power of the heart. Through the creation of spontaneous images of objects, the unconscious surfaces and is made conscious, visually available for the rational mind to look at.” So basically a person can express their feeling in a painting, clay, collage, doodling, making sticks figures or just “letting your arm intuitively pick colors and paint designs” where people can see clearly what’s going on inside that person.
Everyone can do art: kids, adults and seniors. Especially the kids, they learn faster and develop their skills quicker than adults & seniors. Some of the activities include clay, collages, doodling, making stick figures, or just lifting your arm intuitively pick colors and paint designs.
