Rethorical Analisis of the article "Why artists should (not) be paid for their artwork"
By:Jan Albarran
In my article "Why artist should (not) be paid for their artwork" by Maria Brophy , the author tries to make the reader uderstand "why or why not" should an artist be paid for what they like doing or what they know to do as well in order to earn some money and do some really "good stuff". She wrote about her own experience as evidence and also about her brother's esperience, who is an artist. Brophy makes you see the importance of being paid for your artworks as a career.
Brophy introduced her conversation with a guy ("pretty boy"), who is desagreed with artist being paid for their artworks. "Artists shouldn't be paid for their artworks. Getting paid prevents them form creatig really good stuff",-he said. This plays in ones emotions, and is and is an example of pathos and ethos. Brophy is obviously desagreed with his opinion that "artist are better off working a job they hate and then painting in their spare time". Artists need money not only to eat and pay bills, they need money to buy art supplies too. If you don't get paid for your art and you just earn money from a job you hate, there is a very low possibility to be a really successful artist. " If youare at a "real job" 40-50 hours a week, doing what you hate and then youhave to ome home and bne parent, and mow the lawn, and feed your kids, when will you create art?" This is also true; if you spend that amount of hours a week, there will be no time left to do some creative art.
Brophy shows a picture of "Garcon a la Pipe" by Picasso, which is sold for $137.5 millions. This is a nice example of facts used by the author in this article. Here is a reason for this painting to be so expensive. We are talking about Pablo Picasso, one of the most famous and recognized artists around the world. The elements and properties of art used by Picasso in this painting makes it that valuable. Everyone could easily have this painting if they were just given to people instead of sold. Artists and big Masters of art couldn't be able to do that many paintings or murals if they weren't paid for their art.
The author's experience is one of the best examples of emotional convencing method called pathos. Eveyone wants to remember important events of our life. Mostly people will take photographs to remember those events. When Brophy got married, she hired really expensive photographers for her wedding. Here is a quote directly from the article as an example: "I thought back to the artsy photographers I hired for my wedding day. They were more expensive than your average wedding photographres, but they gave me something wonderful: stuning photos of the most important day of my life!" The price of something like that matteres in terms of service and quality. It is hard to believe a really ship photographer would do a better job, it could happen, but if they weren't paid, it would be really difficult for them to do their best at their "spare time" as the pretty boy suggests, and very hard for us to find a good one.
Here is one of the best examples of a logical method using ethos to convene the reader: “Drew Brophy (her husband), has been a working artist since he was a teenage. He’s always “Lived by the Paintbrush”. “He says that painting 10-15 surfboards a day helped him to get really good and to develop a very strong style of this own.” “If Drew had been working in another field and only painting in his spare time, he would have been wasting his talent”. Real artists or people that do artworks as an artist should definitely dedicate a lot of time on it. This way they could practice and get better and better so they could be able to become great artists or even masters.
The author commented about how uncomfortable it would be to work in a job you like and one you don’t like. Here a nice example from the article: “No one should work a job they hate. You were put on this earth with talents and you are meant to do that which you are good at and what you love!”-said Brophy. This is a great example of how the author tries to get your emotions and make the readers think about the fact that you should really do what you love. You may be able to finish something you really hate but you may also get it wrong many times of just not that accurate it should be. Just imagine how boring or even uncomfortable could be to have a job that you really don’t like or hate. The fact of going some where you hate is definitely going to make you really sick and tired.
The author did a really good job in this article. The use of pathos and ethos were in order to convence the reader. Every artist should be paid for their artworks. The best part of it is that they do what they know to do and especially what they love as the author mentioned before in order to progress and get better and better, make happy customers and get some money to keep going on!
